Issa
Issa (say EEE-sah) is a singer, songwriter, poet, painter, and iconoclast. Formerly known as Jane Siberry, she completed her first album while gaining a degree in microbiology at the University of Guelph, Ontario. She recorded six albums including the acclaimed When I Was A Boy, featuring contributions from k.d. lang and Brian Eno. Her song, “Calling All Angels,” has appeared in movies and television productions, including the feature film Pay it Forward. With her own label, Sheeba Records, Issa began a self-pricing policy for her music that has since been adopted by other innovative artists, including Radiohead. In 2006, she abandoned the moniker, Jane Siberry, became simply Issa, and began a new adventure in decommodifying her life. Issa has been honored with the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award in music by the Canada Council for the Arts. A new album is planned for Fall 2008 release.
